In 1961, Chet Bitterman left Pennsylvania Scale Company - the national scale manufacturer in Lancaster - to start a local calibration and service company of his own. He worked out of his garage, storing his tools and parts at home and traveling to clients across southeastern and central Pennsylvania. The business grew, and most of his sons grew with it: first as apprentices, later as skilled technicians in their own right. By 1991 the company had outgrown the garage many times over and moved its offices and shop to the Willow Street area south of Lancaster, with room for equipment, inventory, and a fleet of test and service vehicles.

The Bittermans came up in the mechanical era, when installing a scale properly was a craft - precision alignment, proper lubrication, periodic fine tuning - and a scale installed right lasted generations. That standard didn't change when the industry did. When electronic load cells arrived in the 1980s, they were convenient but vulnerable: electronics in a pit can be killed by moisture, flooding, and electrical surges. While other companies were content to sell electronics and enjoy the replacement business, Bitterman offered a third option through Emery Winslow: hydrostatic (Hytronic®) load cells with no electronics at all, so there was nothing in the pit for surges or water to destroy. Customers who paid a little more up front got a far lower cost of ownership over the scale's life. We still stand behind that trade today.

Modern electronic cells have improved enormously - better sealing, better grounding - and we sell and service them across every brand we carry. But the habit that built this company hasn't changed: our technicians troubleshoot from the ground up, starting with weighing fundamentals, rather than from the top down, swapping parts at symptoms. It's why we're regularly called to solve problems another scale company couldn't.
